Descriptive Question Type Evaluation Assistance

The Trove Inspire Descriptive Question AI Auto Evaluation Tool assists teachers with evaluating descriptive question assessment answers, such as short answers and essays.  This tool evaluates the student’s answer based on the ideal answer indicated during question creation, configured rubrics, and scoring criteria.

This tool is an optional setting that can be selected when creating or editing a descriptive question.

Teachers can review AI-generated evaluations on the Pending Evaluation page, provide feedback, modify scores if necessary, and approve AI evaluations before they are shared with students.

When creating a new descriptive assessment question:

Toggle the AI Auto Evaluation setting to the on position to engage the AI grading tool.

  1. The teacher should add the ideal answer, which is the model response.

  2. The teacher may also choose to add his own rubric(s) for the evaluation and/or utilize the Generic Writing Assessment Rubric that is included.

  3. Selecting “Use Question Setting Score Only” will result in the assessment question being scored only using the total score points indicated in the assessment question settings.

  4. The teacher may also select for the scores to be withheld from students until approved by the teacher.

When editing a pre-made descriptive assessment question:

Select to edit the question and then toggle the AI Auto Evaluation setting to the on position.

The Teacher Hint will serve as the Ideal Answer, so the Ideal Answer box can be left blank.

Make selections for the rubric, points scoring, and score release, and then click Save.

Grading

When a student completes an assessment that includes AI Auto Evaluation, the confirmation message will indicate that the assessment is awaiting evaluation.

AI auto evaluation typically takes a few minutes.  During this time, if the student tries to view the assessment, he will see a message that the assessment evaluation is in progress.

The teacher will be able to access the AI assessment through Manage Evaluation and then by selecting the specific assessment.  After selecting the specific student work to evaluate, the teacher will see the AI response based on the ideal answer and any indicated rubric(s) and be able to adjust the points and leave feedback for the student.

As soon as the AI auto evaluation is complete, the result will be visible to the student.  If the teacher opted for the results to be held until approved, the teacher will first approve or edit the AI evaluation, and when finished, release the results to students.
